Happy New Year! Welcome to Term 1 and the JLTAV Summer Newsletter. I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday break and you are refreshed and energised to start the new school year. We are excited to launch a new website for the JLTAV in 2023. Our new website will be a one-stop shop for all information for the JLTAV.

In 2023, we have a range of exciting events planned for teachers and students. We will ensure these events are run in a COVID safe way and we will promote our events through the JLTAV website, Nihongo Victoria email group, the JLTAV and Japanese Language Teachers of Australia Facebook pages, as well as through the Department of Education and Training Languages Regional Project Officers and the Department of Education and Training’s Access, Resource, Collaborate (ARC) website.

Calligraphy Competition Results

Thank you to the students and schools who supported our 2021 Calligraphy Competition. The ability for students to draw the Japanese scripts in both the pencil and brush categories is most impressive. Please click here for the results of this competition.

2023 JLTAV Events Poster Competition

In 2023, we will again offer our JLTAV Events Poster Competition. Please encourage your students to submit an entry for this competition.

2023 JLTAV Annual Conference

We look forward to welcoming colleagues to our 2023 Annual Conference to be held on Friday 31 March and Saturday 1 April at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) in South Wharf. We plan to launch the program shortly. Many thanks to our amazing colleagues for offering to present sessions at the conference. Through the generosity of our colleagues we have been able to put together another exciting program for the two days.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Friday 31 March from 5.15 to 5.45pm. We encourage members to nominate themselves to join the JLTAV committee for 2023. One gains a lot of satisfaction from being involved in the Association and ensuring Japanese Language Education continues to flourish in Victoria. Please contact me at nlane@mackillopsh.vic.edu.au if you would like further information or you would like to join the committee in 2023.

In 2017, we launched the JLTAV Award, however, we are yet to award this to one of our member teachers. Details of the nomination process for this award are outlined in this newsletter. We extend our thanks to the MLTAV for allowing us to adapt and use their wording.

Sincere thanks to the Department of Education and Training (DET) for their great support and for providing a yearly grant to enable us to organise student events and professional learning for teachers. We look forward to the ongoing support from the DET in 2023.

In 2020, we saw a new format for the external examinations for Year 12 Japanese Second Language. To support teachers the JLTAV produced practice exams in 2020, 2021 and 2022. These practice exams are still available for purchase. Please click on the information in this newsletter to place an order. We will be creating and selling practice exams for 2023 and will let colleagues know when orders are open. Later in the year we will also update our Year 12 Morning resources and make these available to JLTAV members. We wish all our VCE students great success in their Japanese studies in 2023.

Last year our colleague, Michelle Joseph from Emmanuel College Warrnambool, sadly passed away suddenly. At the 2022 MLTAV 75th Anniversary Dinner, a Certificate of Merit was posthumously awarded to Michelle for her outstanding contribution to languages teaching in Victoria. The citation for Michelle’s award has been included in the December 2022 MLTAV Languages Victoria e-journal (here).

Cultural Resources List

The JLTAV would like to curate a list of useful cultural websites and YouTube links, particularly links to practical activities on a variety of topics that engage students. If you have the link to a useful online resource that you would like to share with colleagues, please provide the link in the form below. We will publish the links to these resources on the JLTAV website. Thank you for your support of the JLTAV Inc.
